Formed at Gilze Rijen in September 1940, the unit was a mine detection unit that operated various aircraft, including the Ju 52/MS, Do 23/MS and, Bv 138/MS. Initially under the command of Leutnant Ellgas, the unit operated across Europe and North Africa. On 21 November 1940, command of the unit passed to Oblt. Hans Karmman, who remained in this position until October 1942, when the unit was re-designated 1./MSGr 1.
